Motorola Completes The Push of Android 2.1

On April 4th, 2010 (Easter Day), Motorola completed the push of Android 2.1 to all Droid phones.  I personally got my upgrade on that very day.  However, the folks at Motorola and Verizon went on a pretty laid out schedule.  Beginning on March 31, 2010, the push stating “A new update is available” began appearing on most of the phones.

However, some of us are left in the dust, like a family member of mine.  My father purchased the HTC Droid Eris a few months ago.  I told him all these great things about the phone thinking that it was the successor to the Droid itself.  As it turns out, HTC is far behind on their Verizon line of phones.  One day, I was asked if it’s possible I can setup Google Maps navigation.  I went into the settings to find out more about the phone only to find that the Eris is running Android 1.5.  Way out of date. If you haven’t known about it already, there is a leaked version of 2.1 lurking around the internet.  I installed this upgrade on the Eris and so far the phone is running perfectly.

For me, I’m running a custom ROM on my phone.  Upgrading to 2.1 may be a little risky considering that it is very complicated to downgrade.  With that in mind, I’m now running Ultimate Droid by Black Droid which is a 2.1 based ROM.  It isn’t fully built off of 2.1.

Overall, I am highly recommending that you upgrade.  After the upgrade, my phone is a lot more snappy and the battery life is significantly better than it was running DroidMod 1.0 (will discuss this in a later post).  Keep checking back for a lot more information about the Droid as we are just getting started.
